This is episode number 146 of The Homeowner Show. Whether you're DIY or looking to hire, we're here to help you find the best information and options for you and your home. My name is Kevin Hackett, and here with me is Craig Williams.

CRAIG

Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to The Homeowner Show. We're glad that you could join us for another live edition of The Homeowner Show. here live on Facebook and now live on Instagram.

KEVIN

Hey, hey, hey.

CRAIG

Yeah. And so we actually go live a little bit earlier on Instagram. So if you're over there watching us on Instagram, this is actually a new thing for us. And so I didn't take the bumpity bumps out.

KEVIN

I told you it would not be the last time tonight that happened. Ha!

CRAIG

Look at that. I turned it off. It's show fatigue. That's what that is. Anyway, if you're, if you're over on Instagram, give us a shout, leave a comment down in the feed and let us know how the audio is because we really want to know how that's working over there. We've never done live over there, but we're gonna continue to do that. And so if you want a little bit of behind-the-scenes footage, check us out over on Instagram because we're gonna be going live over there from time to time. Yeah, so check it out. Other than that, the best way to see the show, if you want to see our ugly mugs, it's gonna be over on Facebook.

KEVIN

Absolutely.

CRAIG

And then you can also check it out on the YouTubes.

KEVIN

Yeah, YouTube's gonna be up. This summer is kind of crazy, man. It's gonna be— we might be delayed from time to time, but it's gonna be up. So if you want to see us there, go find us there. But man, tonight we're just gonna jump right in because we got kind of a fun episode.

CRAIG

Yeah, and we were having so much fun with the last one.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

That we just decided to have Ryan Adettle back from Liberty Mutual.

KEVIN

That's right. What's up, Ryan?

Ryan Aduddell

What's up? Love talking tools. Let's do it.

CRAIG

Yeah, so we're gonna be— we're gonna be— so Ryobi or Ryobi?

Ryan Aduddell

It's Ryobi.

CRAIG

How do you say it, Ryan?

Ryan Aduddell

I say Ryobi.

CRAIG

There you go.

KEVIN

Of course you do.

CRAIG

Good man.

KEVIN

Because you're a consumer.

Ryan Aduddell

No, because it's like my name. Ry.

KEVIN

Ryan.

Ryan Aduddell

Ryobi.

KEVIN

It's just the right way.

CRAIG

Yeah. But they have gone out of their way to make sure that we pronounce it the way that they want us to.

KEVIN

Ryobi. And if you watch what we are— have watched, and which is like the, the, the push that they make, their, their new introductory deal of all of their New tools, those sorts of things. They go out of their way to say Ryobi over and over and over. I think they're trying to change the culture, and I'm telling you right now, good luck. It ain't gonna work. It ain't gonna work.

CRAIG

Either that, I'm gonna start calling him Rian.

KEVIN

I'm gonna have to change the name of my son. And yeah, people already think that his name was a girl's name, so it's not going to get better if we start putting the, the why is a hard—

CRAIG

Did you boy name sue him?

KEVIN

No, I absolutely did not. Nope, it is what it is.

CRAIG

It's just what it is.

Ryan Aduddell

Yep. Well, you know, you can't assume anything anymore, so— No.

CRAIG

Yes, I can. Well, watch me.

Ryan Aduddell

Good luck with that.

KEVIN

So here's what we're gonna do tonight. We have, um, we've gone through And we have watched the Ryobi introduction of their 2021 lineup of tools, right? And we're gonna kind of watch this video in the background and we're gonna make commentary on it, right? So you're welcome to go and, and watch it along with us if you like.

CRAIG

Yeah, you can go pull it up on YouTube. We're actually going to be releasing like a shortened condensed version of this just so you can see like what all the tools are.

KEVIN

Right.

CRAIG

So that's going to be a video that we throw up on the Facebook and the YouTube. Just, I mean, it's just like 2 or 3 minute video just so you can see what the tools are going to be.

KEVIN

Right.

CRAIG

Most of them are hitting stores by now anyway. But we're gonna, we're gonna, we're actually gonna stream this video and we're gonna, you know, make snarky comments about it as it goes by.

KEVIN

Yeah. And they are going to be snarky because this was a pretty lame—

CRAIG

It was, it was, it was kind of a dud.

KEVIN

I mean, our professional opinion Ryan, you'll— you'll—

Ryan Aduddell

Ryan.

KEVIN

Sorry. We'll determine what your thoughts are because you've not actually seen this yet. We kind of felt like this was a pretty big dud.

CRAIG

Do you have any Ryobi tools?

Ryan Aduddell

I don't. Okay. As a professional amateur, I don't have any yet.

CRAIG

Okay. Maybe this is the moment. This will be the—

Ryan Aduddell

It could be.

CRAIG

Okay.

KEVIN

Yeah.

CRAIG

So you guys ready?

KEVIN

I'm ready. All right, so here's—

CRAIG

here's—

KEVIN

Roll that beautiful bean footage.

CRAIG

Chip Wade bringing things in. All right, all right, let's see what we got here.

KEVIN

Okay, so, so as he begins here, he— first of all, he— I, I really love his, his bald head look. Yeah, that's really good.

CRAIG

You would be into that.

KEVIN

Yeah, that's really good.

Ryan Aduddell

Well, he'd probably use their polishing tool because it is glaring.

CRAIG

Yeah. Okay. So one of the things that they're pointing out right now is that they have over 225 tools.

KEVIN

That there is no other market out there that even comes close.

CRAIG

No, no. And that's really where they win. I mean, because they do have— they have more tools than anybody else. And they have, they have some really creative ones.

KEVIN

Unique, I would say.

CRAIG

Yeah, for sure.

KEVIN

They've got a ton of things. And all of their batteries work for pretty much everything except for whenever you go from their, their 18-volt battery up to their 40-volt battery. That's, yeah, that's, that's a whole different type of thing. Right?

CRAIG

Right. And so right, right off the bat, here's one of the things that irritates me. So that's like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. So they got 9 tools right there. Okay, so they're also telling us that now they have over 30 of the brushless tools, which always, their brushless line is really nice.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

But of the ones that they have that they're showing right now, and it's like drills and impacts and, uh, what do you call that?

KEVIN

Um, and these are all automotive stuff, I'm pretty sure. I think so. Yeah, showing automotive tools right now.

CRAIG

Yes. Um, so it's a ratchet. That's the word. Yeah.

KEVIN

Okay.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

So, and this is what irritates me when they say that we have 25 new tools. So like 4 of those are different sized ratchets.

KEVIN

They're the same tool. Yes. Different sizes.

CRAIG

Different sizes.

KEVIN

Half inch, 3/4 inch, inch, whatever, right?

CRAIG

So it's, it's, it's just one of those things that bothers me. It's like, okay, you tricked me into watching the video. You told me you had 25. And like, now you've already marked off 4 of those. And it's the same tool with just a different head. And now I will say one of the things that I, if I remember right, from these, because they haven't gotten into it yet, but like, they have adjustable heads on these ratchets, which is super cool, and extensions on them. Yes, that can move. And so that, that makes it really, really helpful. And one of the things that I noticed when I watched this video, and here we are, we're in the garage shot now, is they seem

CRAIG

to be making a pretty big emphasis on the automotive line.

KEVIN

Yeah, I mean, this is the first time that they've done that. I mean, there's always been— I mean, there's a lot of tools that you can use on your vehicle, right, if you really want to. But part of it is like right now they're showing Just taking the lugs off of your vehicle. I mean, for a long, long time, you're using one of those crossbars, right? You're hand ratcheting these things.

Ryan Aduddell

Or an air hammer.

KEVIN

Or air gun if you have an air gun. But if you don't have one, I mean, those, those tools are expensive. Those air gun tools are very expensive.

CRAIG

Are they? Yes.

KEVIN

I mean, by the time you— I mean, you got to think about it because you're buying the tank. Buying the hose, you're buying the gun. I mean, they're, they're not inexpensive to purchase.

CRAIG

This—

KEVIN

the one of the things I love about Ryobi, or in really any of these cordless tools, the tools themselves are really pretty inexpensive.

CRAIG

Yeah, the tools are.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

So these are actually probably some of the more interesting ones that, that they have, which is the variable speed polisher and sander, and then the buffer tool.

KEVIN

Right.

CRAIG

Um, and yeah, which is not really like a— it's really stepping outside, I think, the bounds of what they normally have, because most of what I think they have are like for like repair or like for a specific job, whereas this is more like maintenance of your car.

KEVIN

Right.

CRAIG

And that's why I said it was like— it really felt like they were really leaning into the automotive side. Um, you know, because like some of what these things are that they're doing, like I've bought attachments for my drill to do these things. And now they're coming out with specific tools to do some of these tasks.

KEVIN

Ryan, would you use anything like this for your vehicle if you had it?

Ryan Aduddell

Oh yeah, I mean, if somebody rolled up with me and said, use these tools, definitely. I mean, but really what you're looking at is it's just Barbies for guys, right? You buy the Barbie and you get all the accessories with them. So that's where they're gonna make all their money. It's not on the actual powerhouse. It's on all the attachments that go along with it. And it kind of makes you wonder, are they going to try to get into the tool leasing game on the commercial side? Because you have all these Snap-on trucks driving around and they're leasing out all this equipment. Well, if they're going to go commercial, because obviously in this setting, you know, nobody has a lift in their garage.

CRAIG

Right. Right.

Ryan Aduddell

You know, they're, it looks like they're trying to break into, or at least give the illusion that this is commercial equipment.

CRAIG

Yeah, I think so. I think you're right. Although I do have some clients that have indoor lifts in their garage.

Ryan Aduddell

That's pretty awesome.

CRAIG

Yeah, it is awesome.

KEVIN

Yeah, but like, but for those people, the things that they're using these tools for, I mean, they're, they're gearheads, right? They're people that are, they're mechanics in their own home. And for a long time, I mean, these tools are pretty expensive to purchase. And to replace, right? And at this point, the tools, the tools, $50 or $60, it's the battery that costs most of the money here.

CRAIG

Yeah, I think, I think the difficult sell, what you're talking about is like, the appeal is to the gearhead.

KEVIN

They are.

CRAIG

And I think it's going to be difficult to convince a gearhead to buy Ryobi.

KEVIN

Oh, there's no doubt. I mean, we— how often have we had this conversation? Is it Ryobi? Is it Milwaukee? Is it DeWalt? Is it Black Decker? Is it Craftsman? Is it— Or like Ryan says, Snap-on or Snap-on or whatever it is, because because at the end of the day, like, we, we talked about electricians before. Like, electricians are only gonna buy Kleins. It's just what they buy.

CRAIG

Yeah.

KEVIN

The electrician is not gonna buy Craftsman. They're, they're not gonna go buy the Stanley.

CRAIG

No. See, this is, this is just right here. Sorry. He was showing how the, how the head can extend.

KEVIN

Right.

Ryan Aduddell

Which is super— Telescopic head.

CRAIG

Yes.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

That's very cool. Um, like, if you've ever worked in like a tight space on a car, like, you know how valuable that is.

Ryan Aduddell

Especially on today's cars, you have to remove parts just to get to the tiniest thing.

KEVIN

That's right. And so it's, it's a, it's a specialty tool that makes a lot of sense.

CRAIG

Yes.

KEVIN

But you bring up a good point. Are those people buying Ryobi?

CRAIG

Sure.

Ryan Aduddell

Are they?

CRAIG

Well, I mean, I think, I think that's why like programs like ours are important, right? Because like, it's going to expose people that may not otherwise be looking for that in this brand.

KEVIN

Right.

CRAIG

go like, oh, maybe that's something I should check out. Because like, for the price of what I get from like one—

KEVIN

look at how big that thing is, man. Oh yeah, it's huge.

CRAIG

Either this guy's tiny, or that tool right there, that impact is huge.

KEVIN

No, it's huge.

Ryan Aduddell

Well, you know, size matters.

KEVIN

It does. But I will tell you, this is the— what they're talking about right now is it's the impact ratchet for lugs.

CRAIG

Right?

KEVIN

And, um, the, the, the torque half-inch high torque impact wrench. And I'll tell you, this is a tool that I want to keep in my vehicle. And Ryan, you've, you've got a 3/4-ton truck as well.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

KEVIN

And so taking the lugs off of one of those things after you've already spent all your, you know, muscle just trying to get it jacked up or whatever, and there's how many, 8 of them instead of 6 on the— or 5 on a normal vehicle? Like going through one of those with a crossbar, if I could just keep one of these in my vehicle at all times, it changes my ability to get off the road in a safer position. And for you as an insurance guy, me being on the side of the road changing out a tire, probably not. Yeah, that's not my— that's not your favorite place for me to be, is it?

Ryan Aduddell

No. I mean, you either need one of these tools, especially with a, you know, big equipment. You either need one of these tools or like a teenager that can get it done fast.

KEVIN

That's right.

Ryan Aduddell

You know, and, and these tools, I think the biggest thing when it comes to these type of tools is your battery life.

CRAIG

Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

You know, when you have somebody who's doing this much work, especially if you're polishing, you're moving around a lot, you're going to want a big battery. So if you've got somebody that's already using, you know, this setup in their home for all their other tools, the more you can use that one tool for, the more you're going to go for it.

KEVIN

Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

So, you know, I can, I can see the appeal for the at-home garage enthusiast.

CRAIG

So I will tell you one of the reasons, uh, like we, we almost exclusively use Dodge trucks in our business. Part of the reason is, is for like the last 8 years or so, they've included a 110 plug in the front seat.

Ryan Aduddell

Right.

CRAIG

And we use Ryobi tools in pretty much everything that we do now. Like they, they make our backpack sprayers. I mean, and then we have like an inflator that we keep on all of our vehicles and different things like that. So that as we're going down the road, we can be recharging batteries, right? You know, for exactly the reason that you're talking about. So like, we're not ever running out of— so we'll keep like 3 to 4 different batteries on the truck at one time.

KEVIN

So yeah, so right now they're getting into my realm, which is woodworking.

CRAIG

Okay.

KEVIN

So, so here's what's interesting. Like, there, there's a ton of really, really cool woodworking tools that are Battery specific, and, and some really, really amazing things that are coming on, on the market, like plunge, uh, plunge cutters for, uh, you know, cross-cutting wood, different things like that.

CRAIG

Okay, so what they're talking about right now is a flooring saw.

KEVIN

Yeah, exactly. And okay, and so they're coming into these, and it's a plunge saw as well in many ways. And they're— Ryobi is trying to come in and try to try to give you some practical things to use. But here's the thing, that's a flooring saw. How many people are going to go buy that thing for their home? I mean, you're installing your own flooring. You, you bought that at Home Depot, right? You're not doing a very large amount. And you're probably buying way more than you should because you're, you're cutting it wrong. Like you're screwing this up.

Ryan Aduddell

No, that's a rental tool all day long. That you just go and you rent it from Sunbelt, something like that, right? You know, and you're, you're good for a week, a week or two, and then you're taking it back.

CRAIG

Well, so, but here's, here's the big thing though, is these are all battery operated.

KEVIN

That's the difference, is they're super portable, right?

Ryan Aduddell

Right.

KEVIN

I mean, that's, that's a big, big deal if you're going from job site to job site. Yep. But for the normal homeowner, this is interesting to me that they're, that they're selling These types of products. Now, right now they're getting into nailing.

CRAIG

Yeah.

KEVIN

Framing nailing.

CRAIG

They haven't come out with a framing nailer.

KEVIN

They have— they do not have a framing nailer.

CRAIG

Right.

KEVIN

That's just the big nailer.

Ryan Aduddell

Trim nails.

KEVIN

That's a trim nailer. Um, in fact, it's funny because everybody's waiting for that framing nailer.

CRAIG

They are. They keep calling for it. Yes, they do. It's only a matter of time.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, but that's a beast when it comes to the compression on a framing nailer.

CRAIG

It is.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

Yeah. Have you, have you used one of these battery operated ones though?

Ryan Aduddell

I haven't, no. I've only used the hydraulic ones.

CRAIG

So I've got one out there in the shop. I'll let you take a round with it.

KEVIN

All right.

CRAIG

It's super cool. Yeah.

KEVIN

They're really good. I mean, they do the job really well. But what's interesting is I've got one of the old blue ones that is a stapler and just a brad nailer all in one. And they took it off the market for a while because it was so bad. They brought it back in the same format and it was better. And I happened to get one of the better ones. It works really well. But these Airstrikes, they're not even close, man. They're so much better than the one that I've got.

Ryan Aduddell

Well, I think a huge component to especially woodworking, and for someone who's not a professional, is the safety of a battery. Because I can't tell you how many times I've knocked over a tool because I tripped over the cord. Yeah, you know, or almost—

CRAIG

or the hose or whatever.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, or whatever. You know, there's a big safety component to having battery-operated tools.

KEVIN

Sure there is.

Ryan Aduddell

No. Yeah.

CRAIG

And I think, I think that's a big move that they're making right now is like, if we can get away from the compressor, we can save people a bunch of money.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

So, and real quick, I mean, just Ryobi, if you're listening, like Kevin mentioned something that I was like, that's a really good idea is if they had a battery operated hydraulic lift for like roadside assistance.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, man. That would be sick.

KEVIN

That would be great.

CRAIG

I mean, like, not just because like it would be like, I don't want to be lazy and say like, I don't want to jack the car up, but like if you have someone that's like, not strong enough, right? Or, you know, just incapable. Maybe they have like, you know, arthritis in their hands or something like that, you know? Like, they need to change tires too, right?

KEVIN

Or put some sort of a, uh, like a remote on it so that you could do it from the other side of the vehicle where it's—

Ryan Aduddell

so that you're—

KEVIN

where it's safer, right?

CRAIG

All right, I'm gonna, I'm gonna back this up a little bit, see if I can.

Ryan Aduddell

Let's see. Yeah, I mean, I can imagine, you know, how many times my wife takes the F-250 because it's the, you know, easiest car to get out of the driveway. And if she has to— if she can even get the tire off. Oh, you know, because it's huge. It's so heavy. You're talking about an 80-pound tire.

KEVIN

Yeah. All right.

CRAIG

So we're talking about— they've moved on now until they've got a rotary tool, a compact glue gun.

KEVIN

Yes.

CRAIG

So this is like the crafting market that they're now moving into, which I think is smart.

KEVIN

Oh, I agree. But they're moving into the weekend crafter.

CRAIG

Yes.

KEVIN

Right. I mean, this is legitimately a glue gun.

CRAIG

Like scrapbooking with Ryobi.

Ryan Aduddell

That's right. Yeah. And it's battery operated.

CRAIG

Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

That's crazy. Okay.

KEVIN

Yeah. So, so it's interesting right now it says up there dual temperature settings. So if you're trying to, you know, do something that's really—

CRAIG

yeah, look, there you go. That she's, she's doing hot glue gun With the— that's crazy.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

KEVIN

Yeah. So it depends on the, the type of project you're doing. If you're doing something that's going to take longer before you actually stick it down, uh, you can put it at a hotter setting so it'll, it'll stay melted a little bit longer.

CRAIG

Oh, okay.

KEVIN

Or if you're doing something you need to kind of apply quickly, then you can do it at a lower setting. And oh, by the way, it's got a drip tray on it. It's got a drip tray.

CRAIG

So you don't burn your fingies.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, well, that's what I was gonna say. So you can decide if you want to just You know, kind of burn your fingers, or if you want to melt the skin off full on with that hot glue.

CRAIG

Yeah, get that old Brazilian.

Ryan Aduddell

Yes, just burn all the way through the finger.

KEVIN

I'll be honest with you, this is one of the reasons that I'm going this is a dud.

CRAIG

Oh yeah?

KEVIN

Like, you could have given me a framing nailer, but you give me a hot glue gun?

Ryan Aduddell

Really?

CRAIG

Yeah, like, I'm with you, but like, that rotary tool is pretty cool.

Ryan Aduddell

What is— no, no, no.

KEVIN

And I'm not saying that these aren't cool.

CRAIG

Well, and oh, there's the one that everybody's been going nuts for online. That fan, dude.

KEVIN

That 4-inch clip-on fan. Okay, people online have gone nuts over this thing, and they're, they're like, what, like $15, $20 apiece?

CRAIG

Something like that. Yeah, see, there you go. Yeah, that's the thing.

KEVIN

But you can clip it to any place.

CRAIG

I think it's like 2-speed. Yeah, but I got— apparently it works.

KEVIN

Apparently.

Ryan Aduddell

I, I would hope so. To me, it looks like they're just trying to figure out anything they can stick their battery in.

KEVIN

There's no doubt about it.

Ryan Aduddell

You know, well, yeah, that's just all it is, is sell batteries.

KEVIN

Yep. No, 100%. Yeah, so what we're looking at right now is you see a couple— you— so you got the fan.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, they put it in.

CRAIG

It's all the uses for the fan.

KEVIN

Yeah, the, the beachside chair, all these sorts of things. But you know, they got their flashlights, they've got their hot glue gun now. That rotary tool is, is pretty cool. But it's like, you're, you're right. I mean, honestly, the reality of my wife going outside to get one of the batteries to plug into a hot glue gun, that's probably not gonna happen.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, it's very low.

KEVIN

And I'm not using a hot glue gun because I use this stuff called wood glue.

Ryan Aduddell

Way better. Well, it is interesting who they're showing using the different products too.

KEVIN

So a male or a female?

Ryan Aduddell

Yes, sexism is alive and well at Ryobi for their commercials.

CRAIG

That's right. So because it's clearly a 50/50 split.

Ryan Aduddell

It is.

CRAIG

Yes.

Ryan Aduddell

But they don't show the men using the craft tools.

KEVIN

They really don't.

Ryan Aduddell

They show the ladies like—

CRAIG

Yeah, they did. They took them all off the table. Yes.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, they moved them all so he could get his lights Yeah, because there are lights there now.

KEVIN

Yes.

CRAIG

Well, and, and lighting was a huge release in this line. They haven't really gotten into it yet, but you can see some of them on the table there where, like, and they're just basically like table lamps.

KEVIN

Yep. Or, or a lantern for like a camping trip or something. Exactly.

CRAIG

Yeah. And there you go.

KEVIN

That's what—

Ryan Aduddell

as a camper, I can really see that because you, you do have to take a drill with you to get your jacks down and things like that. Sure. So If I can take that battery off that I'm charging in my camper anyways and stick that on a fan or a light or something, that's, that's actually pretty useful.

CRAIG

Yeah.

KEVIN

And if it's an LED, because it is, I mean, that honestly, that thing is gonna last a long time. Yeah, for sure.

CRAIG

Well, and that's cool. It's so— the, the, the, the light has a lock on the trigger and an adjustable head. So you can, you can stand up, but you can adjust the light where it's shining.

KEVIN

Yeah, so my old blue one that's a flashlight, like, the, the head on it rotates.

CRAIG

Okay.

KEVIN

And so you kind of gotta position that thing in just the right, right way, whereas this one just tilts back and forth. It's way smarter.

Ryan Aduddell

Now, if they could get a headband light with that 40— yeah, that 40 battery on there, that would be pretty awesome. Yeah, I would be impressed. I'm with you. It might be kind of heavy.

KEVIN

It's probably going to be like a sling that like hangs on your side somewhere, but then a lamp on your head.

CRAIG

Okay, here we go. We're moving into some yard equipment, looks like.

KEVIN

All right.

CRAIG

Um, oh, it looks like we've got a— is that a— oh, it's a pressure washer. Yeah, like a handheld pressure washer.

Ryan Aduddell

So it's battery-operated pressure washer.

KEVIN

Yeah. And I'll tell you this right now, people say this thing sucks. Well, yeah, I mean, this pressure washer, they're like, look, if you actually want to pressure wash anything don't buy this. Yeah, that's what I've heard.

CRAIG

Let's see what we got here.

KEVIN

Now, that being said, it's pretty awesome that they tried.

CRAIG

Yeah, we're following Brian's theory here. It's, it's now a lady.

KEVIN

Yes, so she's the marketing manager.

CRAIG

All right, I'm sure she— okay, uh, so this, this was actually a really cool one.

KEVIN

Yeah, I agree. Yeah, so, so they were, they were showing, um, a power inverter Basically.

CRAIG

And this— I, I remember this segment from when I watched it earlier. They have like 3 or 4 different power inverters that they're coming out with, um, and I didn't really understand the utility of the really tiny one.

KEVIN

No, because this one—

CRAIG

this one that has the 2 USB and the 110, uh, made sense to me.

KEVIN

Yeah, except it's so big—

CRAIG

or 120, sorry—

KEVIN

it's so big to like Where are you gonna put that thing? Because it plugs into your, you, to your cigarette lighter adapter in your vehicle. It's so large. Like, where are you gonna put that?

CRAIG

Well, I think the reason it does that is to recharge the battery.

KEVIN

Yeah, it does. Yeah, but to me, I'm just like, okay, where in my vehicle am I gonna put that?

Ryan Aduddell

Just on the floorboard? Yeah.

CRAIG

Okay. Why not?

Ryan Aduddell

I guess. Center console.

CRAIG

Your wife doesn't want to ride with you, just put it in the passenger seat.

KEVIN

No, that's true.

CRAIG

So yeah, this is, this is, this is what's cool about you. You can charge your, your phone, you can charge your iPad, you can—

KEVIN

But they showed something here that I don't think they've talked about yet.

CRAIG

They have not, no. Yeah.

KEVIN

And to me, this is where they really went off the rails in a good way.

CRAIG

So here, okay, this is the little one that I was talking about.

KEVIN

Yeah, yeah, this one actually makes more sense to me.

CRAIG

Well, but like, it's the same thing, it's just smaller.

Ryan Aduddell

So this is just a smaller power bank.

KEVIN

But to me— but see, then it has to wrap around and go to the—

CRAIG

so you still have to have the battery.

KEVIN

You're right, but it's on a cord.

CRAIG

So yeah, and that's more annoying to me. Like, I just want the one thing, right?

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, one unit.

KEVIN

So, so what they're about to talk about here is the solar panels. The solar panels, they went off the rails and they have a solar panel That you can backpack with.

CRAIG

Yes.

KEVIN

Like, you can take this wherever you want to, totally portable, and it'll charge their batteries. Recharge the battery. Yeah, it's unbelievable.

Ryan Aduddell

Well, that's amazing because most of the time when you, when you look at solar panels, they don't talk about the power storage.

KEVIN

Yeah, right.

Ryan Aduddell

People are like, oh yeah, the solar panel. Well, you have to store the power somewhere.

KEVIN

Somewhere.

Ryan Aduddell

So they're, they're making it more user-friendly where you can just say, look, this is the whole system in one pack.

KEVIN

Right.

Ryan Aduddell

So that's a pretty good option.

CRAIG

Well, I don't know if you guys just saw that, but it said dual USB-A, which means it has 2 USB-A ports coming out of it, which means that like, if it has full sun, that thing is generating enough power to have 2 USB-A outputs. Yeah, that's crazy.

KEVIN

Now why they went with the USB-A at this point in 2021, I'm not real sure, but it is what they chose.

CRAIG

I don't, I don't, I don't know the power difference between USB-A, USB-C. I know that the more power goes through the USB-C.

KEVIN

It does.

CRAIG

My USB-C stuff recharges way quicker than anything else.

KEVIN

Yeah, it does.

CRAIG

But I don't know what the actual technical, you know, specifications are on that.

Ryan Aduddell

Sure.

KEVIN

So now they're getting into lawn equipment, and I found this one to be interesting. Here's why I found it to be interesting, because they're showing you something that I would love to have, but I would hate to store it.

CRAIG

Okay.

KEVIN

That's the aerator.

Ryan Aduddell

Oh, the aerator.

KEVIN

The aerator is amazing. It's a dethatcher as well.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

KEVIN

That thing is sweet.

CRAIG

Well, it's cool. But like, have you ever seen like a, like a commercial aerator, like dethatcher?

KEVIN

Yeah, they weigh like a million pounds.

CRAIG

Yeah. And like, they cover a lot bigger of an area.

KEVIN

They do.

CRAIG

Like, to do even like, like your lawn, that aerator and dethatcher is going to take a long time.

KEVIN

And a lot of battery power.

Ryan Aduddell

Yes.

KEVIN

And I'm telling you, man, I don't want to store that thing.

Ryan Aduddell

No, you need like one of these for 5 neighbors.

KEVIN

That's—

Ryan Aduddell

Yes.

KEVIN

This is the neighborhood aerator dethatcher. Everybody has a battery and you're donating it to the person that's using it, right?

Ryan Aduddell

Exactly. Well, and it's just another case of Barbies, right? So they've got the head, they've got the long arm on it, they're already manufacturing all that stuff. Let's just slap one more piece on here and charge them for it.

CRAIG

Exactly.

Ryan Aduddell

Because a thatcher aerator, that's something you go rent every 4 or 5 years for your lawn.

CRAIG

Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

So, you know, it's cool. But again, I think they're just selling batteries. You look at the mower, it's got 2 bad— 2 giant batteries in that thing. Yep.

CRAIG

So, so this, this, this piece right here is actually kind of cool.

KEVIN

I agree. The tiller. Yeah, I agree.

CRAIG

And it's, it's for doing like row gardens in your backyard.

Ryan Aduddell

Sure.

CRAIG

Which, I mean, that, that'll do the job.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, 3 or 4 times a year. That's great.

KEVIN

But the other thing is it's not huge, right? You're not storing— I mean, you can store that in a space that you would store a weed eater, right? Right.

CRAIG

Not too busy. There you go, up to 40 minutes of runtime.

KEVIN

Oh, thank you.

CRAIG

Like, that's, that's actually not that much runtime.

KEVIN

It's not. I mean, that's probably on their, like, 6 amp-hour battery. Yeah, it's, you know, weighs 5 tons, right?

Ryan Aduddell

Oh, and it's selling more batteries. Yeah.

KEVIN

And so this one's hilarious to me. It's a patio cleaner.

Ryan Aduddell

That's because the pressure washer doesn't work.

KEVIN

That's exactly right. That's exactly right.

Ryan Aduddell

No, and, and it's more of a pressure rinser after you use the scrubber. It's like you can use this on the dog or to kind of—

CRAIG

You can really rub the dirt in with this. That's right.

KEVIN

Yeah, like, forget your broom, check out what we have.

Ryan Aduddell

Yes, it's a power broom.

KEVIN

Power broom with the wire brush.

Ryan Aduddell

And yet again, another battery.

KEVIN

Yes.

CRAIG

And I bet you that thing's $129.

KEVIN

I'll guarantee it, man. And this is where it gets to the point where it's like, this is the one that was like, what the heck?

CRAIG

You've got to be kidding me. It's for cleaning out the grooves between your brick. Right.

Ryan Aduddell

And either that is a guy with tight pants and weird boots on, or that was another lady using a power tool to show us the ease of use.

KEVIN

I think it was the former.

CRAIG

I'm glad it's not just me that is irritated by guys that don't buy pants that fit over their boots.

Ryan Aduddell

Yes. Yeah. No thanks. Not for me.

KEVIN

This is the man's homeowner show.

CRAIG

That guy's clearly got like a fake mustache.

Ryan Aduddell

Well, you know, really, for guys with monster calves like us, we don't want to intimidate the other men. So we leave the pants a little loose.

CRAIG

It's true.

KEVIN

Because yeah, I agree with that.

CRAIG

Leave some things for the imagination.

Ryan Aduddell

Yes.

CRAIG

Well, you know, all the ladies are calf ladies. That's right.

KEVIN

Hey, here we are with the— what they're calling a power cleaner.

Ryan Aduddell

But that we know— Not a power washer. A power rinser.

KEVIN

This is a power rinser. And they're literally showing you rinsing off a chair.

Ryan Aduddell

Yes.

KEVIN

When that—

Ryan Aduddell

if it was a power washer, it should be taking the paint off that chair.

KEVIN

That's exactly right.

Ryan Aduddell

But it's not.

KEVIN

No, not even close.

CRAIG

But the head of marketing is going to convince us.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

KEVIN

And so here's the other thing. How many people would actually use a power washer to clean their vehicle?

CRAIG

What?

KEVIN

Like, I mean, it's—

CRAIG

what is that?

Ryan Aduddell

Well, but, but again, it's a power rinser, so it's working.

CRAIG

They hooked it up to a Coke bottle.

KEVIN

Yeah, they literally say, look, it's so portable you can hook it up to a Coke bottle, like a, like a 2-liter bottle, and it's gonna provide enough pressure and enough water to actually take—

CRAIG

How does that even work? Do you have to like turn it upside down?

KEVIN

I don't know, man.

CRAIG

To get the water in there?

KEVIN

Well, it's got a battery.

CRAIG

Well, I know, but like, is it providing like suction?

Ryan Aduddell

There must be a tube that goes down in there.

KEVIN

There is a tube. Yeah. All I'm saying is that if you actually want to get any work done, don't buy this product. This, this power cleaner is—

Ryan Aduddell

Look at it.

CRAIG

Look at all these things that it says that it does.

KEVIN

Yeah, it does none of those. I don't believe that for a moment.

CRAIG

That is— somebody must have spent a bunch of money like researching this thing and now they're like, now we have to sell it.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, it's one more way to sell batteries.

CRAIG

We can't not produce this thing. Yeah, it's the theme of the show. Just, just buy batteries.

KEVIN

And so, and so they end it— I mean, we're pretty much at the end here. They end it going, oh, by the way, we have accessories.

CRAIG

Accessories.

KEVIN

Yeah, these are, these are little things, just bits and, and heads and drill, drill bits.

CRAIG

And well, so we've got, we've got 2 drills, a saw, And then a multi-tool, which I do have to say, I'm very happy that they finally came out with the brushless multi-tool.

KEVIN

Yeah, I agree.

CRAIG

I'm, I'm probably going to be getting that. That is a great tool.

KEVIN

It is.

CRAIG

If you've never had a multi-tool, look into it. I mean, they're fantastic. Ryobi hasn't come out with one in years now, right? I'm interested to see how this one actually performs.

KEVIN

Well, I hope it performs well. It is brushless. It's I hope it does well because again, one of the things— there's a lot of people that slam on Ryobi. I get it. I know why they do. But at the end of the day, like, they're a pretty good option. And I've got a ton of their tools and their batteries have held up really, really well for me. And so if they continue to produce good quality products for a consumer that uses them on occasion like I do, And it's hard not to go with them. And Home Depot's everywhere. You, you can find them everywhere, you know. Yeah, it's not a bad product in my opinion.

Ryan Aduddell

I think it's great. I mean, the biggest thing for me as a user is that battery life on, on any tool. So I have a battery-operated blower, which is great to use around the pool because I don't have to worry about the electric. I don't have to maintain the gas and, and the motor on it. Um, but that battery life, I can make it down my driveway. Yeah. And that's about it.

CRAIG

And it's done.

Ryan Aduddell

So if you give me a better battery life, you know, I'm like waiting for Elon Musk to like pop out and be like, Ryobi to the moon, you know?

KEVIN

And then I'm gonna be like, yes, give me the product, right?

Ryan Aduddell

You know, I'll jump on board. Um, but I think one of the coolest things is that solar panel setup. Yes, it really gets my attention.

CRAIG

Was it— was that your favorite one from the whole—

Ryan Aduddell

from the whole reel? It was just the combination because I think everybody has the heads You know, they have all the Barbie parts, right? You can buy the Barbie, you can put all the parts on there, but when it comes down to like what is really going to be your competitive edge is going to be the battery life and maintaining those batteries and what I can do with it, right?

KEVIN

Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

So you don't see DeWalt and these other companies coming out with as many applications for their power source. So I think that's a pretty, pretty big step. on at least their marketing plan.

KEVIN

Sure.

Ryan Aduddell

So for this year.

KEVIN

I agree. I think that one of the things that they're doing that a lot of tools are doing to your point is these brushless tools are changing the world whenever it comes to battery power.

Ryan Aduddell

Right.

KEVIN

'Cause if you don't know what brushless means, it's a big word that basically means—

CRAIG

Smart motor.

KEVIN

It's a smart motor that delivers the amount of power that you need for the job that you're doing. That's all it means. And so your battery, if you're just screwing in, you know, a screw that, that's pre-drilled, it doesn't take very much power to do that. But an older model that isn't brushless, it's going to use the same amount of power to power through, you know, a drill versus just screwing that screw in. Whereas a brushless, it's going to use only the amount of power it needs. Your battery is going to last longer in those moments. So if you had a blower like you were talking about, they had like a trigger on it, right, that you could apply more pressure to if you need a little bit more or less pressure to a little

KEVIN

bit less. At that point, your battery lasts longer. And all of a sudden, the efficiency of what you're doing goes way up, you know?

Ryan Aduddell

Right.

CRAIG

All right. So, so Ryan's favorite was the solar panel. What was your favorite, Kev?

KEVIN

Mine was definitely the glue gun.

Ryan Aduddell

Joker.

KEVIN

No, no, no, no, my favorite was the fact that they finally came out with a half-inch impact gun that can do the job. Yeah, yeah. This is the 3rd iteration of it that they've had.

CRAIG

Oh, really?

KEVIN

Yes. Okay, this is the 3rd iteration that they've had, and this one is by far the most powerful, um, the best one that they've put out.

Ryan Aduddell

And it's got that torque that you need.

CRAIG

Exactly.

Ryan Aduddell

Um, so torque is huge, especially if you're working on something that's been out in the weather. You know, you really got to be able to— yeah, you got to be able to unlock that thing.

CRAIG

Exactly.

KEVIN

So that's probably my favorite one. What about you, man?

CRAIG

I think my favorite is, is the multi-tool.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

CRAIG

I mean, I'm just— I'm— that's such a— like, it covers so many, you know, options and projects and things that you can accomplish with it. It's just nice to have one with actually a brushless motor.

KEVIN

Sure.

CRAIG

Which, if you've ever used a multi-tool, it's usually like on/off. variable speed 1, 2, right? You know, and like, but like, if you have a trigger where you can engage a little bit more intensity depending on what you're doing, it's going to make it so much more useful. Yeah, so no doubt you'll be able to get a lot more done.

KEVIN

And, uh, I— the last time that they did one of these that we saw, I thought that their product line was a little bit better.

CRAIG

Well, I think the last time it was when they first dropped brushless stuff. Yeah.

KEVIN

And so I think it was a little more impactful, no pun intended. It was a little bit more, um, it was more wowing.

CRAIG

Yeah.

KEVIN

Than this one was. But, uh, you know, here, here's the thing. They're, they're staying competitive. They're bringing out new tools. They're bringing out new options. They're making it more widely available. I mean, no longer are they just catering to men who are trying to do big hard projects, right?

CRAIG

Right.

KEVIN

They're catering to every person because honestly, a lot of the tools that they, that they showed today, my teenager can use, right? My young teenager, my preteen can even get out there and use safely, efficiently, those sorts of things. And so I love the innovation that's happening. I think they're right on target as far as that stuff goes. So And I'm just a fan of their, their product line. A lot of people bash them. And I'm just sitting here going, man, but, but they've got so many options.

CRAIG

Here's the one that I know that Ryan's gonna dig.

KEVIN

Okay.

CRAIG

So, and I don't know how long ago they made it, but you can still find them. It is a Bluetooth speaker floating light show for your pool.

Ryan Aduddell

Oh, nice.

CRAIG

Yes, battery powered.

Ryan Aduddell

That'd be pretty awesome.

CRAIG

Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah.

KEVIN

I mean, The only thing it doesn't do is like have a keg on it.

CRAIG

Oh yeah, right. Add that in there, you're good to go.

KEVIN

That's right.

CRAIG

So like, and like, I thought it was a joke the first time I saw it. Yeah. And I was like, nope, it's real. It's a real tool.

Ryan Aduddell

See, that would be great. You know, put the kids to bed, you don't want to wake up the neighbors, you just want something small, you know, you don't want all the lights on.

CRAIG

That's right. Right.

Ryan Aduddell

So when you and the wife are in the pool at night, you just want a little bit of a show.

CRAIG

Turn on a little Barry Manilow and get a light show going. Yeah.

Ryan Aduddell

That's right.

KEVIN

I mean, let's get it on.

Ryan Aduddell

And you could even use that—

CRAIG

it's Marvin Gaye.

Ryan Aduddell

You could use that power rinser with the Coke bottle attachment. Just put your bottle of wine on there, just shoot it right in the wife's mouth from across the pool. It's not gonna hurt because it's not high pressure.

CRAIG

There's no high pressure in that thing.

Ryan Aduddell

Then it's like a wine rinser, you know, you just rinse away your cares with the pressurized wine. So I mean, all your worries— maybe there's a redeeming quality to that one tool.

CRAIG

They just need the Ryobi cheese knife.

Ryan Aduddell

Hot cheese cutter.

CRAIG

That's right. Oh man, they'll come up with it now.

Ryan Aduddell

Yeah, this is true.

CRAIG

If they are listening, I would like— and Kevin and I have talked about this before— I would like to see the garage door opener come back.

KEVIN

Please make a comeback. That thing is amazing. It's cool. So here's the thing, I know the reason that you take things off of the market is because it sucked.

CRAIG

Yeah, make it better.

KEVIN

There was something about that thing, and someone told me, like, I found one online the other day. Actually, you found it, sent it to me. It was $100 for the whole system.

CRAIG

Yeah.

KEVIN

Um, the person that was selling it said that the sensors were so sensitive that if the sun shone in on it, the garage door wouldn't close.

Ryan Aduddell

Wow.

KEVIN

Okay, so you got some issues Fix them. Yeah, please bring that thing back. Yeah, it was amazing. Don't let your great ideas go to the wayside just because they stopped working. Fix it, bring it back, just like you did the nailers. Give us, give us what we want. We're supporting you. We're behind you. We will buy it.

CRAIG

We'll blast that thing across the interwebs.

KEVIN

That's exactly right.

Ryan Aduddell

You know, and if they won't fix it, there must not be enough return on the investment to fix it. But a lot of times you just have to switch, you know, who you're marketing to. If you go to the home builder market, right, and you make the right moves in that home builder market, then you're putting those new, you know, garage door openers in every new house in a neighborhood, right? Then, then you've got the right market and you've got the right money to make those adjustments.

CRAIG

What the problem was that I think it was Eric G that pointed this out to us is like there's, there's too many other companies making really good garage door openers. But what was cool about the one that they had is I think it had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. I think it had 6 ports on the exterior of it where you could either jack in your battery to recharge your battery.

Ryan Aduddell

Nice.

CRAIG

Or if the power was out, you could jack in a battery to power the garage door opener. But it also had all these attachments to it. Like it had like an air compressor attachment with a pull-down hose. You could air up your tires.

Ryan Aduddell

Nice.

CRAIG

It had a light, it had a fan, it had all these different things that you could plug into it.

Ryan Aduddell

Right.

CRAIG

Um, so it was like a— like you were talking about the Barbie car, you know, it had all the fun accessories that you could add on to it and really just go nuts.

Ryan Aduddell

Just Barbies for men.

CRAIG

Yeah, that's exactly what it is.

KEVIN

Good stuff. Yeah, well, listen, thanks for tuning in. Uh, we hope you enjoyed this episode. It's a little bit different than what we typically do as far as, uh, that goes, but you— we're gonna link up the video in this to, uh, let you go watch along as we, you know, commentate in the background. And, uh, man, we're just glad you're here. We're here each and every Tuesday, so thanks for tuning in. Until next time, we'll see you later.

CRAIG

See ya!

Will New Laws Actually Lower Home Prices?

The Homeowner Show kicks off with a lighthearted, albeit slightly gross, discussion about an infestation of flies and a spider web in their studio, a stark contrast to the more serious topics that follow. This initial banter quickly transitions to personal anecdotes about home maintenance and repairs.
